What a Week

Oh boy last week was nuts! I knew it would be busy but I never imagined it would be that crazy, add on the unexpected and we didn’t accomplish much at all let alone having time to post on the blog .

Monday was fairly relaxed, we stayed at home in the morning and did some house work, in the afternoon we met some of my nursing friends at Earl’s and had a margarita while the ladies cuddled babies. The girls were definitely out of sorts though, Kassie was very fussy, she never cries but she was all tears while we were there unless I had her. She was fine when we left though and she hasn’t made strange with anyone else so I have decided that the atmosphere wasn’t for her.

Tuesday we had to getup early and make our way to the hospital to see Lena’s neurologist for a 9am appointment. Too early when you have twins and live 40mins from the hospital. Needless to say we were late. Once we got there we saw the Dr right away and immediately our quick appointment was turned into a lengthy affair. The neurologist was not too impressed with Lena’s eyes. Due to the pressure in her head from the hydrocephalus she does not have very good control of her eye movements and they tend to drift downward (sunsetting). The Dr felt that the sunsetting should have resolved itself by now and wanted her to have another CT scan right away to make sure the shunt is working and the fluid has drained. You have to be completely still for a CT scan though and babies generally are not so… off to the ER so that an on call pediatrician could sedate her and monitor her while she was sedated. The outcome… the fluid had been draining but since the draining had occurred the large ventricle has moved away from the shunt and the shunt is now in a small ventricle, hence her eyes have gotten better because some pressure has been removed but they are not GOOD because there is still pressure there. We are hoping that the fluid is still draining via the small ventricle and that a revision won’t be necessary. For now we wait and watch and hope her eyes continue to improve (which they are just very slowly). After we had our long hospital visit we still had some errands to run so we did not get home until way later than I had intended.

In August we will go for another CT scan and see the neurologist and depending on her eyes and the CT scan we will decide if a revision is necessary. Cross your fingers for us, we don’t want any more surgeries esp brain surgery. TO top it all off, we were all going to go on a nice family holiday at the end of August, surgery will mean it won’t be a family holiday.

Wednesday we had our regular PT and OT appointment with Shelly and Laura. I love taking the girls to these appointments, Shelly and Laura always have good things to say about the girls and they are always impressed with how much they’ve grown, progressed etc. It makes me feel good to know that even though we don’t get in as much stretching as we should that good things are still happening. Shelly was extra impressed with Lena this time around. She said that she could do many more things than at our previous appointment, good to know she’s catching up. I really hope we don’t have to have another surgery it will just mean more set backs for my little Lena. After our work out we ran the rest of our errands and bought Wayne a Father’s day gift, chrome for the Harley. Man by the time I left the city I was exhausted.

Thursday Wayne had all of the kids over and not much ever gets accomplished Thursday afternoons because it is just way to hectic around here and we spent the morning recovering from the rest of the week.
