The Preemie Fairy Strikes Again

Published by Korrina - Proud Mom of Micro Preemie Twins at 12:50 pm under Preemies

Aren't me glasses cute?

Yep I can play with them on!

OFF they go!

Hmmm are they good to eat?

Yep they ARE GOOD TO EAT!

The preemie fairy has struck again. No it’s not entirely bad, just one more thing to deal with (and spend money on). We have been seeing the ophthalmologist for regular check ups since the girls had their ROP (retinopathy of prematurity) surgery in the NICU.

When we went to our one year check up in October the ophthalmologist told me the girls might need glasses but that she does not give prescriptions to little kids until she has seen them twice and they have needed a prescription both times. She noticed that Kassie’s eyes were turning in to focus. Lena’s eyes had improved tremendously since she saw her in the fall before her surgery. So we left with instructions to return in two months and that if their prescriptions were the same or worse we would get a prescription for glasses then.

Since October we have noticed Kassie’s eyes turning in more and more. So on Friday we went to our two month followup appointment and yet again Lena’s eyes had improved in that they are more steady and placed properly in her head. However, both girls required the same prescription to focus on distant objects (they are both near sighted). I knew that Kassie would need glasses but I was shocked at the strength of the prescription, -4 in the left eye, -2.25 in the right eye.  Lena’s prescription is so weak that the ophthalmologist said that we could try to see if it helped or not. So I asked what she would do and she said she would try it, so we will. Her prescription is only -.5 in her left eye and none in the right eye. Both girls need a correction for as astigmatism in both eyes. So we ordered them both glasses. The optician only had the one pair in stock so we got Kassie’s first. Lena’s are on order.

So now the battle is on, Kassie NEEDS glasses but she does not want to keep them on. When we first put them on in the optical shop she thought they were cool but they took them off so many times to fit them that now she thinks they are much cooler off than on. Yeah! Another thing to fight with her about. But she looks so darn cute!

At first I thought that Kassie was just trying Mommys glasses on. They look just like yours. It is amazing how cute the glasses have gotten for babies. Kelly got glasses when she was 4 and they where pretty bad. They do make straps for the backs of glasses to help keep them on. I wish I had some magic way to help you keep them on. I’ll keep my ears open if I hear something.
She looks so cute in them. What a miracle that Lena is doing so well with her beautiful eyes.

They are so cute. I am sure they make real good teethers. That preemie fairy sometimes I don’t like her, Elizabeth is 3 and she is coming less but it would be nice if she went away for good.
