Still in the Hospital

Today was a fairly busy day. Lena had a CT scan this morning to make sure that her ventriculostomy is working. There was a little bit of an increase in ventricle size but the minute change can also be attributed to the infection and high protein levels so we will have another on Thursday to compare. That scan will be the final deciding factor in whether or not it will be safe to leave her shunt free.
Lena is scheduled to have her “final” surgery on Friday morning, the type of surgery will depend on her lab results over the next three days and her CT scan on Thursday.
After her CT scan today the surgeon and I decided that it would be in Lena’s best interest to change her EVD (drain). Her lab work has been coming back with some wonky numbers and with the slight increase in ventricle size was causing some concern that her drain could be growing some bugs. So this evening at 5pm local time she underwent a minor surgery to replace the drain with a clean one. This way we will know for sure that the lab results for the next few days are true results and hopefully it will help us make our decision regarding Friday’s surgery. She did very well and recovered nicely from the anesthetic. What a brave, resilient little girl we have.
Wayne had to go back to work today so I had both girls at the hospital all day. It felt good to have them both with me all day again. I can’t wait for life to be back to normal again. I am so sick of rewarmed food and hospital beds.
Cross your fingers for good lab results, small ventricles and no more infections by Thursday; so that we can have a successful surgery on Friday, go home healthy and stay home.
