It is February 27, and Lena is in surgery as I type this. Last time Lena had shunt surgery, she was just a little baby and took it all in stride pretty well. She’d been through so many surgeries that she’d become a little trooper at the process.
It’s been over a year since she [...]

Oh Boy! The Month of May has been crazy around here. It started off not too bad. It took a turn for the worse when we took a short 3 day trip to Edmonton on the 7th and went down hill from there. Call it a coincidence or Lena hates Edmonton. We have only taken [...]

Kassie is addicted to Gerber’s Lil’ Crunchies. They are like cheezies but veggie flavor, for toddlers. Feeding a micro preemie can be adventerous at times, heck, down right frustrating. There are oral aversions, picky eating, gagging, vomiting and more. I have never been a calorie counter, couldn’t be bothered. Now I am counting calories for my kids, not to cut them [...]

I am glad that I decided to switch to BPA Free bottles when I did. Heck I am glad I have bottles at all.
I don’t know about the rest of the country but in Saskatoon, there are almost no bottles to be found anywhere. All of the major (and minor) retails have pulled all bottles [...]

Yesterday I took Lena to another allergist for a second opinion. When we went to the first allergist I just had this feeling and for once, I listened and took her to another doctor. Glad I did.
Our first test showed positive for milk (cow and goat), peaches, mango, barley, and egg. However, the doctor that did [...]

Today, two major Canadian retailers Forzani and HBC (Zellers and The Bay) announced that they would be voluntarily pulling all water bottles and baby feeding items containing BPA (bisphenol-A) off of it’s shelves and would no longer sell any feeding products containing the chemical. This was done in anticipation that Health Canada is preparing to announce today [...]

Yesterday at PT and OT both girls tried a custom made stander, Lena absolutely loved it, Kassie hated it but we were able to distract her so that she put weight through both legs, an important step to standing and walking.
Problem, we can only use it at the Kinsmen Children’s center for now. Apparently Health Canada decided a [...]

Well, we are following the BRAT diet on the advise of our wonderful family physician Dr. Alanna Danilkewich (she is great). Guess What! Lena actually kept her breakfast of bananas and rice cereal in her tummy this morning. Yeah! Cross your fingers for us that this is the beginning of the end of our vomit [...]

Little Lena has been sick. Since Friday Lena has been vomiting off and on. When she woke up yesterday I thought she was all better. Friday she vomited up almost everything she took in. Saturday she lived on grape Pedialyte, no vomit. Sunday she vomited once after breakfast then kept all of her formula and [...]

When I was a kid I had a lot of food allergies, not the hives and Epi-Pen kind but the rash and irritability kind. The kind that are not life threatening just annoying. So I was expecting the girls to have sensitivities to some things, luckily nothing seemed to bother them. When Lena was hospitalized for [...]

So today we had a more intense therapy session than usual (a very long day). About 3 months ago, our OT Laura referred Lena to the Feeding Clinic at KCC (Kinsmen Children’s Centre) to evaluate her feeding and identify any problems. When Laura was working with Lena on some feeding in December she noticed that [...]

21, that is how many times my little angel, Lena, who is not even 17 months old (13 corrected) has had a CT scan. That is how many times she has been exposed to massive amounts of radiation so that we could see inside her little head. That is how many times the “benefit” of [...]
